About Zelly

With the help of a Belgian Shepherd acquaintance, Zelly made her way from France to the US in August 2015. I picked her up with my friends as we embarked on a road trip to move me home from vet school after we (and Quiz and Aspen!) landed in New York. Zelly immediately exceeded ALL my expectations! On one particular pit stop, we stopped at a creekside trail in South Carolina to walk the dogs. Zelly picked up a stick and started playing with it, so I tossed it into the water. Without fear, she leaped with perfect form, into the creek to retrieve the stick—a waterdog right from the start!

So naturally, Zelly’s first ever title was in dock diving! When Zelly was just over a year old, a friend shared an open dock event on Facebook. I showed up having no idea about dock diving. She went off the ramp a few times and had no issues going off the dock. I went home and found the next trial which happened to be the next weekend. Yet again, I arrived knowing nothing. She earned her Junior title that weekend. After starting off in the Junior division (10’-14’11”), Zelly consistently increased her distance as her confidence grew, and now she jumps high-Master (22’-24’). Although she excels at distance jumps, Air Retrieve is her absolute favorite as the rules don’t change and she doesn’t have to catch my terrible throws! She consistently hits 20’ and 21’ in Air Retrieve. Zelly has earned excellent titles in both Senior and Master—she earned her Dock Master Excellent 3 this year. She has been invited to Nationals every year she has competed.

Since I had never had a bite sports candidate before, and Zelly’s sire is accomplished in French Ring, I decided to try it out with her. She is a sassy princess. While her grip is lacking, she makes up for it in spunk and drive to bite.

Zelly is Farm Dog Certified and shows promise as a herding dog.

Weighing in a 45lbs and 21.5 in tall, Zelly is a petite girl out of wonderful French working lines. Her sire is one of the top French Ring dogs in France earning his Ring 3, and was selected for the French Ring National Championship in 2012 and 2013. Her dam is from solid French Ring lines, as well. Zelly has never met a stranger, human or animal, and loves politely making new friends wherever we go. She does not have an anxious bone in her body! As a testament to her incredibly stable temperament, our local Search and Rescue team made an exception to their no-bitework-dogs rule because the trainers all agree that Zelly is absolutely not a bite risk.

Zelly’s outgoing, social personality, and willingness to try whatever I ask of her made her the perfect starter Belgian Sheepdog!
